Sachin, 12 — Odisha

Sachin lives in a remote village in Odisha. His parents are daily-wage labourers who never had the chance to learn to read; when he struggled with his lessons, there was no one at home who could help. Like many children in his village, he was on the slow path to dropping out.

Then an NCDS Open Door Learning centre opened nearby. Six days a week, Sachin found a trained teacher, books, and a quiet place to study. Within a year, he went from struggling to topping his class.

"When I become a teacher, I will come back and teach in this same centre."

Prabha — Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh

When Prabha was widowed, she lost more than her husband — she lost her family's only income. In Kondagaon there was little work for a woman with no qualifications and children to feed.

Silai Saugath changed that. Prabha learned to cut and stitch, then to take orders, then to teach. Today she is a trainer in the very programme that rescued her, teaching more than 20 women in her community to earn with their own hands.

"First I learned to feed my children. Now I teach other women to feed theirs."

Sunitha — Akoi Village, MP

Sunitha was a teenager when burns left her with injuries her family could never afford to treat. For years she lived with pain and visible scarring, withdrawing from school and from the world.

When an NCDS screening camp reached Akoi village, Dr. Babitha's team identified her case and scheduled her for free corrective surgery. The operation cost her family nothing — and gave Sunitha her life back.

"I had stopped looking in the mirror. After the surgery, I started going to school again."

Kusuma — a mother’s second start

After her husband's death, Kusuma faced an impossible question: how does a widow with no income keep her children in school? In many villages, the answer is that she doesn't.

NCDS gave her a different answer. Her children were enrolled in the local tuition centre, free of cost — and Kusuma herself joined the Silai Saugath tailoring class. Today her children are learning, and so is she.

"My children study in the morning. I study in the afternoon. We are all students now."

From teacher to social worker

He joined NCDS as a centre teacher in 2018. By 2020, the work had changed him — he trained as a social worker and now serves whole communities, not just classrooms.
